If your brand appears in the synthesized comparison, you reach prospects at the precise moment they're deciding whether to spend money. If your brand is absent, you're invisible during the most important conversation.
Tables dominate this query type for one reason: AI engines extract structured data more reliably than they extract prose. A table has explicit dimensions (the columns) and explicit entities (the rows). The AI doesn't have to infer relationships — they're encoded in the markup. Anatomy of a citable comparison table
Four characteristics separate AI-citable comparison tables from decorative ones:
1. Use real HTML <table> markup, not divs styled as tables
This sounds obvious but is the most common failure. Many frontend frameworks render comparison "tables" as nested div trees with grid-style CSS. AI engines read the DOM, not the visual layout — a div tree isn't a table, no matter how it looks to a human. Use <table>, <thead>, <tbody>, <tr>, <th>, <td>. The semantic elements are the entire point.
2. Use <th scope="col"> for column headers and <th scope="row"> for row labels
The scope attribute tells parsers (and screen readers) what each header refers to. AI engines use this to map cells correctly. A table without scope is ambiguous; with scope, every cell has a clear (column, row) label pair that becomes a fact triple the AI can extract.
3. Lead with the most-asked dimension
Whatever buyers care about most in your category should be column 2 (right after the entity name in column 1). For SaaS, this is usually pricing. For local services, hours or location. For products, the headline feature. AI engines disproportionately cite the leftmost dimensions when answering one-line comparison queries.
4. Be specific in every cell
"Yes" / "No" cells are weak. "Starts at $29/month" or "14-day free trial" or "Not supported" are strong. Cells with specific values double as citation-worthy answer blocks for "How much does X cost?" follow-up queries.

Each cell is a fact. Each fact is a potential citation. AI engines extract this table as a structured comparison the user can act on, not a marketing claim they have to interpret.
What to put in comparison tables
For every category your business competes in, build at least three comparison tables:
- You vs your top 2-3 competitors. Direct head-to-head. This is the table for "X vs Y" queries.
- Top 5-10 tools in your category. A category overview. This is the table for "best tools for Z" queries.
- Pricing breakdown across tiers. Your own tiers compared to common alternatives at each price point. This is the table for "what does X cost" and "is X worth it" queries.
If your category has obvious "switcher" segments (people leaving Tool A for Tool B), build a fourth table specifically for the "alternatives to Competitor A" query. These pages often outrank the alternative's own homepage in AI engine recommendations because they're built to be cited, not to brand.
Choosing the right dimensions
Three rules for picking columns:
- Pick dimensions buyers care about, not features you want to brag about. Run the 8-prompt audit (Foundations Lesson 3) and look at what AI engines mention when comparing your category. Those are the buyer-cared dimensions.
- 4-6 columns is the sweet spot. Under 4 feels thin. Over 6 feels overwhelming and dilutes the most important columns.
- Include at least one dimension where you don't win. Tables that show your tool dominating every dimension are pattern-matched by AI engines as marketing pages and weighted down. A balanced table where Competitor A has a real advantage in one dimension gets cited more often.
The 200 words around the table
The table itself is critical, but the prose immediately above and below also matters. AI engines treat the surrounding paragraphs as context for what the table represents.
Above the table: A 60-100 word paragraph stating who this comparison is for, what criteria you used, and when you last updated the data. Date matters — AI engines prefer fresh comparisons.
Below the table: A 100-150 word recommendation paragraph. Not "we win" — instead, "for X type of user, Tool A is the right choice because Y; for Z type of user, our tool is the right choice because W." Conditional recommendations get cited more than absolute ones.
Schema markup for comparison tables
Pair every comparison table with appropriate schema. Three options, depending on context:
- FAQPage schema around a section that asks "How does X compare to Y?" as the question, with the table embedded in the answer. AI engines map FAQ schema to comparison queries directly.
- Product schema on each entity in the comparison if you're listing tools or products specifically. Use the
reviewproperty to add specific dimension ratings. - Article schema on the page with
aboutpointing to entity URIs for each tool being compared. This connects the comparison to the entity graph AI engines maintain.
Implementation: building 3 comparison tables this week
- Day 1. Pick three comparisons to publish: you vs top competitor, category overview, alternatives-to-X. Choose dimensions for each.
- Day 2-3. Build table 1 (you vs competitor). Real HTML, scope attributes, specific cells, surrounding prose. Include one dimension where the competitor wins.
- Day 4-5. Build table 2 (category overview). 5-10 entities, 4-6 dimensions, conditional recommendation paragraph below.
- Day 6. Build table 3 (alternatives). Same pattern; aimed at the competitor's brand-search traffic.
- Day 7. Add FAQPage or Product schema as appropriate. Validate. Run Reffed audit on the new pages.
